Observatory 1D

Experimental Camera/Film

Observatory 1D is an experimental camera. In this take on the camera obscura, a narrow slit serves as the aperture, instead of a traditional pinhole or a lens. This design allows the camera to isolate a slice of the visible field, compelling the light to reveal images that elude the naked eye. The extreme reduction of the field of view converges the focus on a narrow dimension of space, where familiar shapes morph into abstract shadows. As the camera scans through its surroundings, it unveils visions hidden in plain sight, inviting the viewer to observe the ordinary, with a different gaze.

Using the camera, video footage was shot in various location in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy during the year 2023. Created material was edited into a film and was presented as a projection installation.
