Network Proximity Atlas
Multimedia Installation
Network Proximity Atlas is a multimedia installation examining the infrastructure of the internet and the varied degrees of connectivity it produces across the globe. The speed of an internet connection between two points is not solely determined by the physical distance, but rather, it is greatly influenced by the quality of the infrastructure along the signal's path. Patterns of connectivity created as a result offer insight into the complex power dynamics that steer the development of the global network.
The work investigates this property of the network by measuring connectivity with every country and analysing the collected data. The first part of the installation examines each connection and generates a sonic rendering, where the tone representing the returning signal is altered according to the latency of the connection. In the second part, the recorded parameters are used to generate a map of the world based on connectivity. In it, countries are rearranged according to the speed and the quality of the connection.
